Nevada Cement Company has been manufacturing and distributing bulk and sack cement in Northern Nevada and Northern California since 1964. Construction began in 1962 and the production of portland cement began in 1964. Original design capacity was 540 tons per day. In 1969 construction of a second kiln, raw mill, and two finish mills began and was completed in 1970. By 1976, a coal handling and firing system had been added to the plant. In 1986, a Fuller single stage preheater was added to the number two kiln.
Portland cement is a manufactured product made in several steps. First we carefully blend limestone with shale or clay and iron to a desired chemical composition. We then grind it to a fine powder called raw meal. We feed the raw meal to a rotary kiln that is fired by coal, natural gas or another high energy fuel.
