As a Half Moon Bay resident, Big Creek is my local lumber store. With the recent fires and then heavy rain and wind storms they have been very busy. Still, I find the staff very helpful and knowledgable. As an old lady, they went out of their way to load my truck for me without asking and when I returned from paying I saw they had even tied a red flag to the end of the 18' footers that were sticking out the back. Thanks guys!

I was helping a friend with a fence that needed replacing. When it came time to get the fence boards I looked everywhere.the big box stores had price point boards that looked pitiful. And they were under in thickness as well. I called Big Creek Lumber not expecting much in the way of help or competitive pricing. I was wrong on all counts.the man on the phone was super helpful, told me what he did and did have and an actual inventory count.
I was getting prices of $13 a board at local yards, but he quoted me $7.53 a board so I figured it was worth a drive from the city. When I got there I found exactly what their guy told me was there! The quality of their worst board was better than the very best at the big box shops, so it didn't take long to load up. I needed hardware as well and the guys in the office made solid recommendations and the pricing was super fair.
I hadn't shopped at Big Creek since their Davenport store closed, so a long time ago, but the service and prices reminded me of how businesses used to run. great service, good product and fair pricing.

Master carpenter, engineer, designer for 50 years. Been doing business with big creek for 18 years. Big creek reminds me of doing business with airbnb - no fun, but they make me money. Big creek is the only game in the county for certain things, like special order lumber, so I have to do business there. If you go there with low expections, you won't be dissapointed.

They didn't have the lumber I needed even though I called 30 minutes before I came and they said they did. Some of the employees weren't wearing masks inside the office you have to enter to pay either and they weren't helpful or knowledgeable about the prices. I doubt I'd return. I knew I'd be paying more than the big box stores and I'm fine with that but I'd like friendly, helpful service to go with it and clear pricing.

One of the best and cheapest lumber yards in Santa Cruz! So I have very little building experience but I've been doing a few outdoor home building projects and have been needing a good amount of redwood that can hold up in the outdoors. I been usually going to San Lorenzo lumber but remembered this place and thought why not give it a shot. It's a lot smaller then San Lorenzo but carries most of the same stuff for building wise (not as much lights, plumbing, etc but still small selection).
I went inside and got the things I needed then headed back to my car to head into the drive thru lumber yard. The lay out is catered more towards builders meaning that there is not much labeling of what's what but they have awesome employees there to point out where to look and what's what. I founded the redwood I needed and the guy helped me load my car and cut down to 8ft (forgot his name but this dude was the man! Def will be back cuz of him. 4/30/20 @3pm) he dug though the stack and helped me pick out the nicest looking ones! Ive gotten attitude or treated like I'm dumb at other places because I'm young and know nothing about building because it's not my full time job lol, but not at all from him!
He was curious at what I was making and was asking questions and giving tips! Check out is a little different you don't pay at the window they write you a ticket and you go inside to pay. When I went inside to pay I was shocked at my total. It was almost $100 LESS then San Lorenzo for the SAME product! BC charges only $3.53 per LF vs SL @ $4.57 a LF for redwood planks. That's a good difference especially if you need a lot of wood!
After getting home and comparing it to the stuff I bought at San Lorenzo it looked so much nicer and way better quality. Idk if that's a thing but maybe it's the way they treat it? Overall awesome experience and will be back for all my building needs. Sorry San Lorenzo but Big Creek is my go to now!

When we had big projects in Bonny Doon, we bought our lumber from Big Creek Lumber Company. First, they delivered and that meant I did not have to load or unload the lumber. Very important when you have a million things to do. Second, the quality of lumber here is so much better than we could get elsewhere. Third, everyone is very helpful and nice.

My wife and I gutted are house in El Granada and were driving over the hill every day for supplies as we thought locally would be to expensive. We had a few emergencies and were pleasantly surprised that pricing was competitive and service was excellent. The learning curve was fast and were grateful with the they educated us with all the products. Thanks Half Moon Bay Building

Their redwood quality is far far above the firewood you get at Home Depot, Lowes, and even the dedicated lumber places. Only place that comes close is Pine Cone Lumber down in Sunnyvale. Bought 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, and 2x12 in both rough and planed redwood. Picking the 2x12s off the rack without even cherry picking was nice--extremely minor amounts of twist, and almost no cupping and bowing.
I was making outdoor furniture, but with the exception of knots, much of this could have been used for indoor with a pass or 2 on the jointer. I think they mill most of theirs from their own managed forests in the Santa Cruz mountains.

If you want to receive a certified letter in the mail warning you that if your contractor doesn't pay Big Creek Lumber they'll put a lien on your home, go with these guys. Personally, I have hired numerous contractors over the years for various projects and am presently building a home in Half Moon Bay, I have NEVER received a certified letter in the mail from a materials supplier threatening to put a lien on my house if the contractor I hired did not pay them.
I am told they send this letter to homeowners who use contractors who pay in cash too. This was all over a fence I'm building for the home, BTW, the contractor I'm using is in good stead with these clowns. I'm spreading the word, I suggest you re-evaluate your policies Big Creek. The potential threat of a lien on a property is a serious matter, its downright despicable when you send it to responsible homeowners who employ local, responsible contractors who are in good stead with you.

My daughter and I went to the lumber yard at right about 5p.m. on 8/29/2016. They were in the closing process and my daughter walked into the office and asked if someone would be able to make a small cut in a stick she will be using in her slider, for safety concerns, in her new apartment. Much to my surprise the man said sure and he was back within a couple minutes. AND NO CHARGE!
It is kind of sad when we are shocked when someone goes beyond the call of duty. It was a refreshing feeling for me and my daughter. My daughter is going to miss this small town vibe. Thanks again!

If you want the most beautiful and perfect redwood lumber available anywhere, Big Creek is the place to go to get locally harvested redwood. Family owned and environmentally harvested. If you are fortunate you will see large premier shipments stacked and ready for delivery to some uber-high budget builds: stunning color of redwood. But don't be concerned about pricing, it is sometimes less per linear foot than big box stores. Go!

Needed a small piece of wood cut for a kitchen cupboard. The cutting was done in a twinkling.but the process of paying the $5 dollar charge was painful. The clerk seemed clueless how to find the proper billing codes.took 2 minutes to cut the wood and 10 to pay the five bucks. Nice people.but oh boy do they have all the time in the world.

This place this place should give lessons on customer service. I was having a stressful Thursday when I went in with three kids to order some sheet rock to be delivered. They had so much patience for my rambunctious crew! Upon leaving, we realized my four-year-old daughter had hidden my car keys in the store. Two of the workers in the delivery department were happy to search for my keys with us and finally found them. The prices were a fan Tabula's and we will come again thank you thank you thank you for all your delivery construction needs go to big Creek lubber store.

As a longtime Coastside resident I've enjoyed the convenience of having a fully stocked and full service lumber company right in downtown Half Moon Bay. Recently I wanted to replace and expand an old makeshift redwood patio deck with nice 'Trex' composite decking. I checked prices over the hill but ended up getting just as good a price right here plus next day delivery!
The staff is courteous and knowledgeable, but I must say that Charlie, my service rep, was extremely helpful in helping me not only select materials but helping out with the design. He also recommended an new method of fastening the planks that saved a lot of time! If you live on the Coastside and have a project involving lumber try Big Creek Lumber, and ask for Charlie!

A great place to buy lumber on the coast if you need to do it. Not only do they sell wood, but also other materials to build your home, like cement and sheetrock. Not really any deals here but the lessened travel time might be worth something I guess. They really have a nice selection and it is in a beautiful location so buy some wood, bring your lunch and eat it in the midst of the beautiful Santa Cruz mountains. The staff doesn't get that much drop in business, mostly commercial, but they are nice and helpful if you need them to answer questions or load the truck.

A nice, convenient place to buy lumber if you live on this side of the hill. They also have some other building materials, such as sheetrock. I bought a bunch of long pieces of moulding and they loaded my truck very nicely. But they didn't have enough of the style I wanted to complete my 2 bedroom place, so I was forced to buy some damaged pieces. They gave me a 15% discount on the damaged pieces, which was okay but not really enough considering the damage.
