Stupidly, I decided there would be no better time than the pandemic to rebuild a two-family I had bought during the 2009 recession. The house sat for years, barely remade, while I lived and worked in another city. The agent advised me it was a tear-down. Two years after moving in, it is almost structurally rebuilt, but no cosmetics, yet. How wrong I was about building in the pandemic, ladies and gentlemen!
Every single thing I have paid union and top tradesmen (and bottom tradesmen, all told) to perform has been done wrong. So every job I had to either teach myself how to do, in order to redo it, or pay a second or third tradesman to redo! It is as though everyone took a collective mental timeout that justified not paying attention to their work. I went through an entire remodel/rebuild budget in the first few months of the pandemic. Prices tripled in San Diego, where I live.
And the work was triply bad. A nightmare. So what does that mean when you want to buy a well-made rustic gate? Does it mean I have to rebuild a new gate? That was where my expectations were. So here I am, ready to put in a gate I have not even been able to find. I am tapped out of money, doing one project at a time, as I can fund it out of my check.
I knew, no matter what, that I had to have a strong Mexican-style gate. It would make my property beautiful, but I have felt that like no other time in my life, I had to have a secure, secure gate. There are so many people not working or living on the streets, looking for opportunity, or simply desperate. After weeks of searching in Mexico for a Mexican-style gate, with ironwork, including an iron-protected "peek" portal--and just an aesthetic I desired-- I had to expand my search.
Nothing was what I wanted outside European-made merchandise. This is how I came to find Pacific Gate Works. I knew in about an hour of researching and speaking with the representative, Dave, that this was what I had been looking for. I upgraded everything in my order--thickest gate they made, iron studs and peek hole, copper drip cap on the top, They said it would be 6 weeks.
I doubted it, but I was stuck. Price? A little over $2K for a custom-made gate. It arrived, on time, undamaged, delivered to my garage by FedEx. My worker and I just opened it. It is a marvel! Utterly, breathtakingly beautiful. HEAVY! Beautiful finish-sanded, clear cedar. Not Mexican, not primitive-- just astonishing. Everything I do to it now will be either a step down or a step up. But, trust me, this is the finest gate you can get outside hiring a professional carpentry shop to custom make it for you.
I will update this, with pictures, after I get the surround built, then get it hung. Yes, the frame and hardware came with it. I am taking it to a car shop right now, to get a bid on what it will cost to custom spray it.

Their website is modern and clean. There aren't many gate options online, so the website definitely influenced my purchase decision. I contacted them for a custom gate in September. There were a lot of e-mails and phone calls back and forth to clarify the customization. I appreciated this process and the willingness to get the customization correct.
While I was told in writing that the only change to my second and final quote was the style of door, I failed to realize the sales rep removed the copper cap that I requested. When the revised quote was sent to me, the sales rep stated in the body of the e-mail that the only change made was the style of door, nothing else. I also had a conversation with the sales rep, that if memory serves correctly, that due to the thickness of the door I upgraded to, the copper cap was automatically included.
I received the door and there was no copper cap. I reached out to the sales rep, but I was told that neither quote had the copper cap, I pointed out that this was incorrect because it was on the first. Then I asked if I could have the cap sent to me so it can be added, and I was told unfortunately not and there is nothing that can be done at this point, but have a happy holiday.
I accept that I should have received in writing that the copper cap was included, or to point out the error of removing the copper cap on the revised quote, but I was most disappointed by this response and don't feel good about doing future business. Otherwise I had a great experience. The gate itself is high quality. Without the stain it was quite thirsty and needed lots of clear coat applications.
My husband said the bolts provided were not high quality. I did receive the gate late, but my expectations have been managed during COVID on delivery timelines. FYI- They cannot clearcoat the wood, so I opted to stain it myself to maintain a natural wood color. They cannot bore specialized dimensions for door locks, so I decided to do that on my own as well.

My wife and I purchased 2 gates from pacific gate works, very beautiful and very well constructed. I had a little problem hanging them, but the owner actually came out and showed me the correct way to hang them. Couldn't believe it, never happens to me. We would highly recommend the gates and the company.

In the past 14 years my husband and I have purchased three custom gates that were designed and manufactured by Pacific Gate Works. The quality of the wood that they use far surpasses that of any other gate that I have ever seen. It is what you would expect to find being used to build fine furniture. There are no knots in the wood like you are accustomed to seeing and the fact that nails are never used is a real plus in my opinion.
The hardware they offer is top notch. The craftsmanship of the gates couldn't be better. Whenever we placed an order, we found the PGW staff to be knowledgeable, helpful, and accommodating. We have never had any reason to contact the company once we received our gates except to replace the hardware on our first gate. It is obvious to us that Pacific Gate Works takes great pride in their gates and we are very proud of how ours look and how well they have lasted all these years. We have received many compliments and we never miss an opportunity to tell someone where we bought our gates.

Absolutely love the gates this company builds. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are top notch and the cedar itself is holding up extremely well in the rainy Pacific Northwest. Also bought some custom lattice pieces for the garden and they are amazing. This is like no other lattice I have ever seen. It's an inch thick all around and the stain looks amazing.

These gates are amazing! I installed a 4-0 by 6-0 pre-hung this Saturday. The quality of the cedar is superb. The gate was well protected in shipping, no dings or dents. Hardware package was good for installation into block wall on one side and stucco on the other side. The lock set hardware was German designed precision. My customer was very happy with the installed product. This gate is worth the extra money.

We recently redid our backyard and fence and wanted to update the look of the gate. After doing a fair amount of research we settled on Pacific Gateworks pre-hung options. Very glad we did. Went with the Rose City and the wife loves it. You can tell it's high-quality, well crafted and will last for a very long time. Saved some dough too as I was able to install it myself. Seems like a good company who takes pride in craftsmanship which you don't see as much any more.

Beautiful gate and exceptional quality Our double gate (8' wide, 70 tall) was poorly constructed and blew apart constantly. We received 3 quotes - 2 were standard gates by local fence companies and one was for a custom gate by Pacific Gate Works, with professional 3rd party installation. The PGW option was $400 more, but was superior visually and in quality.
The PGW gate uses mortise and tenon and tongue and groove construction. That means no screws and nails that pull apart or rust. The kiln dried and sanded finish is gorgeous. This was installed in November so I used Behr Quick Dry oil based stain in natural (see pic with stain on left, unstained on right). We also ordered the hardware pack, as it was less expensive than anything else I could find. Ordering the hardware also means they carve out a space for the hinges in the door so if fits flush against the jams (jams were also included).
The handles work from both sides, which is really nice. I only gave 4 stars because I can't yet comment on durability. Also the website is a little difficult to use (have to sort through blog to find important details) and there were no instructions with the gates that were relevant to our gate. My landscaper and I probably made a dozen phone calls to figure out the installation.
I highly recommend professional installation (it cost us $750 to remove old gate and to install new posts, arbor and the gate; gate cost about $2k). I stained myself, which saved $250 and took me about an hour. I recommend using a lambswool wrapped sponge (found at HD) for quick, even application.

We live in Southern California where virtually most of the construction industry and the contractors are very busy perhaps due to the recent construction boom in this particular section of the Southern California. I was looking for a patio backyard pathway gate manufacturer from somewhere else than from the local vendors with an idea of that I may be able to save money. Ordering from this company was a good choice for the excellent workmanship and overall quality, professional packaging and (not so on time) delivery and competitive pricing.
The delivery was late but I got a comfort with the good price. Anythng what they could do better job shall be their scheduling such that their delivery can be done as planned. They were late on the promised delivery but I was able to feel and have some comfort with their good price.
