I'm a longtime resident of the Palouse. Pullman Building Supply unfortunately has gone downhill in their customer service. I went in yesterday to purchase a piece of hose, there was no one in the area. I found someone a few rows down and asked her for help. she called for someone on the walkie talkie and I went back to the hose area to wait. 10 minutes goes by and I walk back to the woman and ask "where's the help"? she says they're on their way.
I go back to the hoses looking around and there is no one around, finally an employee walks from the front somewhere and helps me. he was very nice and helpful. this seems to be pervasive of every time I go. either I can't find help or the employees can't help me and have to call someone. there needs to be some cross training and stop forcing your employees to quote stay in their lane.
The time before last I went, I spent a half an hour in the plumbing section waiting to speak to an employee before I finally gave up and left. Edit: I've been contacted by PBS management wanting more information regarding my review in their effort to improve their customer service. Props to the management, thanks for your efforts. (extra stars added due to your resolution)

Prices aren't good but they are here locally. I couldn't use my rewards points which I thought would help offset the $100 price discrepancy. I came in on a Saturday originally to see if they'd be able to at least work with me on the price but they wouldn't do that on a Saturday because I needed to speak to a specific manager. I would have liked to have used it over the weekend but I thought I should do the right thing and wait until Monday to at least give them the opportunity to earn my business but I was given the same answer. I won't be making my next big purchase at PBS but I did support locally this time just because it feels like the right thing to do with the current economic circumstances.

I had an amazing experience here over the weekend! Everybody was very friendly and helpful. One person in particular was very helpful and very kind. Her name was Hannah and she was very helpful and very nice to me. I was not from the area and she made my visit to Pullman Building Supply amazing. We chatted about her going to school and other things. She was a ray of sunshine in these difficult times. I appreciate all the things she did and think she should be recognized.

I have submitted an online customer survey about my experience on Pullman Building Supply (PBS) website over 2 weeks ago but never heard back from anyone. We have spent about $3,000 on materials & equipment rentals at PBS for a retaining wall project. I'm especially grateful and would like to send a huge thanks to Jasper (guy with cool cowboy hat & boots) who was very patient and super helpful.
He walked me through all the invoices & refunds (we had many orders and palettes of left over materials that were returned). I'd also like to thank Izzy, the girl in contracting, who also answered my many questions & along with Jasper helped me set up a rewards account. Garret (cool mask) & Tyler (cool beanie) from the rental department were very helpful in explaining all the rental charges. However, on Saturday 12/12/2020 while nearing the end of the process of trying to settle everything from the many orders with Jasper, I had a very bad experience.
Another employee, Lorna, began telling us that the coupons I had brought in could not be used. She said that a customer could not bring in a lot of coupons from 20 different coupon books and only one per person was allowed. My coupons were cut out from the Pullman Survival Kit for amounts of $5 & $15 and had previously been told to bring them in, which I was doing.
I did not bring in my coupons from 20 other books as part of some scheme to commit some kind of coupon crime - they were sent to my house. It was almost like she was saying "one per person" means you can only use 1 coupon in your entire life - totally confusing and not in line with what other employees had said. In any case, if the coupons are invalid, I would expect someone to politely tell me so and simply return them to me and that would be the end of it.
If the employee I was working with was doing something wrong I'd expect the "manager" (her) to talk to them and work through and correct the problem. What I don't expect and will never forget is what she did. She didn't do any of that, she instead talked down to us very loudly, aggressively and vindictively as if we were some kind of criminals. "You are not the first to try this!" she said, like she had caught us in a coupon crime.
She finally ended by telling me personally to not bring any more coupons to the store again. She made us feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome there. Even some employees were uncomfortable and went silent. It was totally unprofessional. I have worked in customer service for 5 years -- including at a 5-star hotel -- and would never talk to anyone like that. After that unpleasant experience, my husband, who originally wanted to look at fencing supplies when I was done, just wanted to get out of the store and not go back there.

Every time I go in I think, what do I need. Then someone asks how can I help, I try to explain and they listen. then they help me. I end up going what I need the item I was looking for, the direction on how to complete my project, sometimes they can't help but they tried! Flooring and Cabinets, they are always ready to assist me to the point I "trust" them to get me the best product at a reasonable price and fit me into the schedule! You guys are great! Keep up the awesome service!

Today's small engine technology is excellent. My attentiveness to'em isn't, but in all fairness, I renewed all fuel mixtures in 1989. Although my wife seemingly has few problems with her gizmos, recently, some of my small engine implements began a nagging retaliatory misandry. You know: failing to start after a coupla yanks, refusing to run on the 2cycl slurry in the ignition chamber pot, starting with the pleural hack of a nonagenarian smoker and regurgitating the sputum back through the intake manifold. Disgusting!
In two yanks of a cat's tail Pullman Building Supply's courteous small engine repair staff had'em back to me purring like the neighbor's kitten, and they were much friendly than the neighbors puppy. Hey, these guys are good.

Worst customer service for Christmas trees. The dumb lady thats so ugly that you can see how ugly she is even if your blind had a ton of Christmas trees and said they were noble fir but they were grand fir and all the trees were dead and she wouldn't sell us the good Christmas trees because "they are back up trees" and when i told her the horrible service she was giving she said "oh okay then" in a sarcastic way. Horrible will never buy a tree there again. (Please fire the girl at the tree lot) awful and part way ruined my Christmas. Dylan Age: 10

Updated Review 6/15/2018 2-Star I am downgrading my review from 4 to 2 star for the following reasons. I don't appreciate intentional rudeness on the part of Leah W. I don't know if it was because of the return or the fact that I was wearing construction clothing at the time. I was working on my house. I'm not accustomed to being treated poorly.
I spend a lot of money at this branch. Maybe I will just use the Moscow branch in the future. In case the store wants to address this. My refund no is 153726. Date 06/15/2018 at about 1:30 pm. My customer number is LC0018565881. Pullman building supply - four Star Let's get right into the review. Pullman Building Supply has a 4-star review because overall customer service is mediocre due to lack of friendliness from some associates.
The other reason is higher taxes due to the state of Washington versus Moscow Building Supplies lower taxes due to the state of Idaho. The appearance store is very well organized. They have smooth concrete floors, superb lighting, and well stocked shelves. Overall the appearance of Pullman Building Supply appears to be better than Moscow Building Supply because it's a newer store.
The employees in Pullman building supply are not as friendly or helpful as Moscow Building Supply. Both stores are superb overall that I would highly recommend to any builder in the area, if you happen to be a Pullman resident stopping by in Moscow definitely go to the Moscow store and see the difference for yourself - I promise you will see a difference.
The selection of items in both stores are almost parallel, I personally cannot see the difference. I used to buy a lot of plants from Pullman Building Supply. The plants we bought we're taken good care of and professionally kept. 2 years later and they're still growing without problems or diseases because of the employees care for the plants.
Both stores are professional in every way including looks. The lumber in both stores is pretty good - it's average for the area. The checkout system is the exact same in both. Both stores have plenty of parking. The prices are very expensive, however this store is wonderful for DIYers that don't need a ton of materials like contractors. They sell good compost fair prices.
Overall Pullman Building Supply is a wonderful store to shop - I think they need to work on some of the employees to be a little kinder - that's all. Thank you for reading my review.

I wish the employees were more helpful. Maybe you should actually check to see if you have an item before telling a customer you don't. Maybe you should ask a manager. I've repeatedly gone in there to request and item just for the customer service desk to tell me they don't have it. Then I walk through the store and find it. Be more willing to help you customers instead of being lazy.

Interesting store. Seems to be trying to provide a hybrid between your local neighborhood hardware store and one of the larger stores like Home Depot. Great, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Somewhat funky, hometown ambiance, which I loved. Very good selection, but not quite as deep as one of the larger stores. I would have preferred a bit more selection in the home storage area. Seems to be more hardware than home, but after all, it's called a building supply store, not a home store.
The one area of real concern.the prices. Some of the prices are quite steep compared to the competition. I know it doesn't have the buying power of a larger chain, and when possible, I prefer to by local and have knowledgeable help, but there were several items I found next door at Walmart (same item, size, etc) for as much us 40-50% less. Ouch! That said, for their selection and staff alone, PBS is well worth checking out.

It has about as much variety as Lowe's or Home Depot, but with much better service and more knowledgeable employees. My main complaint is that the hours are terrible--open only until 6:00--which is difficult when both adults in the house work for a living. We're constantly forgetting about the hours, and stopping in right after dinner only to find it closed. We end up going to Ace or Shopko instead whenever possible. An 8:00 close at least once a week would really be helpful.

This place is great. They just opened a brand new store in Pullman and I was blown away. Great product variety, like the big box lumber yards in some respects, but so much nicer and more personal, like a small town lumber yard or hardware store. Wood products are stored indoors, out of the weather in their enormous warehouse. I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few hardwoods in stock.
And a really nice high quality tongue and groove knotty pine that I need to match existing wood in my house, the likes of which is cannot be found at the big boxes. Along with their surprisingly large variety of home improvement and building supplies, they also have a good selection of work clothes, housewares, yard & garden, gifts, and more. Overall it's a great place that will save me many trips to out of town lumber yards.
