Ashby Lumber

Getting ready to do my first ever DIY project that involves lumber, I went to Home Depot - because that's where you go for stuff like lumber, right? First lesson learned: Never go to Home Depot. I have already lost too many hours of my life to the Kafkaesque nightmare that ensued from trying to order a lumber delivery from them (yet somehow, unbelievably, it is not even over yet!?) So I googled "lumber" in my area and found Ashby Lumber Company.

What a difference. Just being a non-nightmare would have been enough, but they went above and beyond, getting a small-but-inconveniently-sized delivery out to me quickly + at a great price. They were nice while doing it, too. Learn from my mistakes and go to Ashby Lumber first.

I went there for some pegboard, only a single sheet, so wasn't spending a lot. But the team was incredibly helpful and unbelievably nice! The front desk was nice and the guys in the warehouse incredible! Finally, Jeremy helped me understand windows better, even though he usually works with contractors. He took the time to explain the best options and was very generous with his time even though I wasn't someone to sell to. Thanks to the team! Well done and I highly recommend using Ashby whenever you can.

It takes GREAT customer service to have me write a review here. I don't do it often, But, today at Ashby Lumber - damn! I paid for some lumber and went to get it loaded, and was greeted by Leroy. I told him I was building something for a wedding, and he walked me over to the stacks and moved around a LOT of wood till we found the pieces I need.

Keep in mind 4x6x12' can break a hand or finger with ease. But here he was doing waaaaay more than necessary to make sure I had exactly what I needed. With a smile, and the best attitude. So rare these days. Thank you Leroy. You make Ashby Lumber look really awesome.

The person at the desk was very helpful with finding a siding to match my client's home. He was a bald guy facial hair maybe. He was at the second register from the front of the srore.

Extremely well-stocked lumber selection, and so much more pleasant than the orange big box store across down the road. We found exactly what we needed for a fencing project. Shout out to Brandon D and Joe J in the warehouse for their expert help and attention to detail! Thank you!

These guys have been rude to me twice now. Just wanted to return some screws but apparently they don't take returns on their screws if you open the plastic bag. And then to be rude about it. Then he just throws away my receipt. White guy with a goatee. Won't be returning.

Five stars! Excellent service at Ashby Lumber from Brandon D and Jesus L! I'm a homeowner who knows basic construction stuff (very basic) so I told Brandon at the cashier station it was my first time at Ashby today. He was very patient with me and WAY out of his way to make sure I got what I needed! I used to go to Home Depot in Emeryville but NO MORE! I'm going to shop at Ashby and say hello to Brandon from now on! Thank you Brandon and Jesus!

I've been here a few times to purchase some wood for shelving, and the staff is always very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. Highly recommend!

I had to walk long distance but they had what I went beautiful and big very very big place. They have everything so was the price.

Called them To make a large order and the sales woman was talking her way out of the purchase before I could even make it. I guess they didn't want my business. Bummer that management couldn't be a little more on top of their people.

Never thought I'd be reviewing a lumber yard, but my experience makes it worth it. I Just bought some Mahogany Decking and I have to say that Brandon at the counter was super helpful and friendly. When we drove away, my wife even said, 'no wonder you come here, they treat you like they know you'. Anyway, at the counter, Not only did Brandon D. give me a very good price on the wood, but he also met me at the lumber yard and helped me select the pieces.

I was actually surprised to see him there. That was above and beyond. He was friendly and courteous and helpful without me asking him. Makes me feel good about shopping here. Seems like old school friendliness. The mahogany is beautiful. We're using it for interior baseboards and I'm guessing that's why Brandon took the extra step to make sure I got the right pieces. If you need lumber from Ashby, don't hesitate, and hope you get Brandon!

First time customer 8/4 Hard Maple buyer. Top notch man in the mill! Helpful beyond the typical point and yell."its over there". Great selection from looked like a local legend of a business. You gotta check this place out.

The guys at Ashby Lumber were super helpful getting us set up for our pantry construction project. We were pretty clueless and first went to Home Depot. Big mistake. The wood they sold us was garbage. Next time will will go to Ashby lumber first. In particular, Joe and Brandon in the warehouse spent a lot of time with us to make sure we got the right materials and for the best price/with less waste.

I had a great experience buying several dozen S4S maple boards (for a home interior decor project) from Tony Blomert at Ashby Lumber. Their price was reasonable, and they delivered exactly within the quoted timeframe to my home in Mountain View. And Tony's communication was very responsive, friendly, and thorough. Two thumbs up!

I love roaming a good old fashion hardware store. Its almost like a treasure hunt and its inevitable that I find something that I did not even know I needed (to be fair I usually do not really need it). Ashby Lumber is just such a store. This is a complete hardware store with not only the usual suspects for such outlets but also boasts a pretty high end kitchen and bath showroom.

They also have a huge selection of wood including an outdoor yard. The real gem here (and with other places like it) is the staff. Friendly and knowledgeable, they always seem to know what you are talking about when you describe you know the doohickey that hangs off the round knob. They ALWAYS know what you need. Contrast that to the confused puppy look you get at a big box retailer. Quite a gem here

I visited Ashby Lumber company today to look for a very specific cut of wood and I was greeted by Brandon and DQuan. I was so impressed with how they so thoroughly looked for the right piece of wood for my unique project. It was close to closing time and I never felt rushed or that they were ready to leave. They both provided just outstanding customer service! I will definitely be back!

I have worked with Jeff Smith at Ashby Lumber for plumbing needs for many years. In particular, he has done a great job helping us pick a kitchen faucet and then solved issues we have had with it, always in a timely and professional manner. I really appreciate his willingness to make things right.

I was there about a week ago to buy some lumber for a deck. Brandon helped me, and provided me with a variety of options to choose from. He was friendly and patient with me while i took my time in deciding what would work best for my budget and project. Definitely coming back for my next project!

Impossible to reach their line, called 5 times would get a voicemail or line disconnected. Finally got an employee, explained that I bought a skillsaw Sept 5, 2021. I opened it, but then found a better one with a laser addition elsewhere. Called to see if I could return it, Ashby Lumber said no, even with a receipt once tool is opened you cannot return it.

Other companies would accept a return Will not be returning or recommending this establishment. It's unfortunate because the location is convenient for me (Berkeley) resident.

Ashby lumber staff went above and beyond to help with our project - Daniel was friendly, kind, and helpful, and everyone else I spoke with was similarly pleasant and efficient. I would absolutely work with them again. Thank you all so much!

As a first time homeowner facing plenty of projects, I've sought advice and expertise from the employees at Ashby Lumber many times and they always deliver! They are very knowledgeable and have been helpful to me over the past few years with thinking about my needs for various things (plumbing, new doors and windows, building a deck, fence, and bench/storage box, stucco repair, painting, tiling, etc.) Other hardware and supply stores are closer to the house, but I go across town to Ashby Lumber because my experience with the place is so good every time.

If you've ever done a remodel, you know how utterly stressful and complicated it can be. The best part of our remodel has been working with Angelica Martinez in Ashby Lumber's Kitchen & Bath Showroom. She knows her stuff, instills a great deal of confidence, keeps the mood light and the choices doable. I was having extreme decision paralysis, in the midst of picking out dozens of products we needed, and she helped us navigate our options with lighthearted ease while also being incredibly knowledgeable.

Even in placing our very long order, she was eagle-eyed on every detail and never ran out of patience with me, despite my asking a million questions. If I could give her 6 stars, I would! Thank you, Angelica & Ashby Lumber, for the incredible local customer service. You're the best!

This is our favorite place to get some exotic hardwood. They have great selections and people are very friendly and helpful.

The front staff are helpful and their selection is good. Good COvid protocols inside store. All their untreated non green dry wood in their yard we've bought is still "wet" though, which causes a great deal of sap after cutting. Will look elsewhere for lumber now. Not sure why Their kitchen and bath folks are there at all : they don't want to answer questions, can't refer you to installers and seem annoyed that you asked. Tried on numerous occasions to give them our money but bought elsewhere. Perhaps they just deal with existing contractors and don't want new business? Is that what those inviting looking seats are for?

I don't know why they bother with a phone system, when no one seems to answer it. Its a nice lumber yard, but getting someone on the phone for information is difficult, especially if you are a contractor who works in the field : you really dont have the luxury of sitting comfortably while the phone rings. For two mornings now I have tried multiple times to speak with some one, no avail. Quite frustrating. Yea, I know that everyone is busy, well hire more people. bob

Ashby has much better lumber selection than the big box stores, friendly and helpful staff, and the hardware we've needed for most projects. We try to vote with our dollars and support local businesses whenever possible and are thankful to have found Ashby. Highly recommend!

I always operated under the assumption that Ashby Lumber is pricier than Home Depot, but I've found that this is definitely not the case most of the time, and for actual lumber products, Ashby just has higher quality lumber. More importantly, folks who work there actually know what they're talking about and are immediately helpful vs. the usual experience of going to HD aimlessly wandering the aisles looking for just the right thing. I have an account with them and feel grateful for the consistently excellent service and quality products they provide.

Great place they have every tool possible better then home depot. great prices friendly staff. if In the area stop in and take a look I bet you will find something you will need.

The one star is for the lady in the plumbing department who may be the only competent person working at this place. For the third time, my bathroom fixture order was missed. First we get two duplicate shower bars, then our vanity came with the directions for a different unit and with a duplicate set of feet to stand on. But wait, there's more- the hand shower was not ordered, and when we got the medicine cabinet, only one of the three pieces came, again because Paul made yet another ordering mistake.

He was kind enough to finally answer the phone after I left more than 10 messages to different departments in Ashby Lumber without getting a single response for a couple of weeks (literally, I am not making this up). The complete lack of communication was absolutely unacceptable. The additional medicine cabinet pieces were ordered, but yet again there was a mistake.

Two separate, unrelated (and significantly more expensive) mirrors came, yet the Ashby folks insisted they were the correct ones. Of course they weren't, and it took another several (more than 5) calls and messages that again went unreturned, until finally Paul answered. When I informed him of yet another mistake, there was again no apology, and I was questioned as if I was incorrect. Finally, more than a month later, and several wasted trips by my contractor, we got the right pieces.

But wait, it's not over! They completely forgot that there were the two incorrect mirrors that had to be returned. Had I not reminded them, they would have been out nearly $2,000 with of mirror. Clearly they have zero attention to detail for their customers and their own inventory. Good luck to anyone who wants to shop with these guys. You'll need it.

Good place to get lumber, faucets, plumbing supplies. Went there numerous times for our kitchen remodel & for the most part had a positive experience. Jeff was really helpful when I ordered knobs & pull handles for our kitchen cabinets. Prices are very competitive. At times some of the front cashiers seemed agitated when costumers had multiple questions or need additional help.

Just bought a new house and have been going the cluster route of Home Depot doing runs back and forth until I found Ashby Lumber and more specifically Robert! This fella is about the most helpful person I've ever met and also the most patient since I have never done any type of house renovation before. He knows everything I sling at him and if you guys go here definitely ask for him!

Price gouging during the COVID-19 pandemic is illegal. $12.99 for a small hand sanitizer. $7.00 for two rolls of paper towels. $39.99 for a Chinese mask that claims NIOSH approved but has no N95 or P100 rating (it's a fake) Lumber and building material prices 30-50% higher than the big box hardware stores. Surly and difficult staff. How the heck does this place stay open?

I needed two red oak, slab doors. I called this place and they had exactly what I needed and worked with me to choose the particular cut of red oak. The doors arrived when promised and are good, solid, sturdy doors. I finished them myself and had the hardware installed. They look great.
