Mario's True Value Home Center began in 1962 when Mario and Jane Palleschi ran a small hardware and paint store on Main Street, Valatie. As the community grew so did Valatie Paint and Hardware. In 1980 a small lumber business was started. As the lumber and hardware business expanded so did Mario's. A 7,000 square foot addition to the Home Center and a large lumber and building supply warehouse was built to accommodate the needs of the growing community. In 1998 another addition was made to the lumber and building supply building and Mario's took on Just Ask Equipment Rental Company.

I tried getting a quote on a specific manufacturer's kitchen cabinets but the designer refused to give itemized pricing details after waiting weeks. It's not clear if I would ever get the details even once I placed the order. Not sure if they are disorganized, understaffed or shady. If you want transparent pricing, this is not the place.

My partner and I have been shopping at Mario's since we bought our first home in Kinderhook. It's a nice small-town, family owned business in Columbia county. The building materials sales staff are always friendly. Andy, Steve and a new gentleman I've seen a few times lately are always eager to help. In the retail portion of the store the cashiers are always smiling and Carrie at the paint counter is very helpful and sure knows her colors.
The reason for my rating is due to the self-proclaimed "manager" of the store with his very professional backwards baseball caps and Weemmet's teeshirt (and other tiny shirts to show off his arm tattoos) who, when he's not rudely interacting with customers or barking orders at his employees, can be found lounging around on his cellphone. I've asked this "cool dude" for help in the store and it always feels as though I'm interrupting his feng shui. What a bummer for a great staff to have such a black cloud lurking in the store.

I prefer Mario's to the chain stores. One, I'm buying local, which is important to me. Two, the sales staff is knowledgeable. Three, with big items, they deliver for minimal charge. Example: I just bought a new grill. It was delivered same day, assembled. Plus, they took away my rusted out old grill. Try that at Lowe's or worse, Home Depot Mario's has been here for a long, long time. for good reason
