Thomas and Skinner was founded by John Esterline in 1901 who was an EE professor at Purdue University. In 1923, James Thomas and O.H. Skinner acquired magnetics division. Today, our company is an employee-owned manufacturer of magnetic materials headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. We are involved in the Space, Industrial, Energy, Defense, Oil Exploration, and Commercial Aircraft industries.
Our goal is to provide the highest quality, domestically- produced custom magnetic components, stay close to customer base, maintain technological advantage, and avoid low-technology, low-price segments (low-quality and/or high-volume applications).

Thomas and Skinner was founded by John Esterline, an Electrical Engineering professor at Purdue University. Professor Esterline, inspired by the demonstration of commercially viable electricity he witnessed at the Chicago World's Fair in 1895, recognized the need for permanent magnets to be used for residential and commercial power metering within the burgeoning electrical utility industry. He formed The Esterline Company in Lafayette Indiana and began producing tungsten and chromium alloy permanent magnets by 1901.
The most common magnetic materials in use today are alnico, ceramic (hard ferrites), samarium cobalt, and neodymium. Each are made up of different elements used for different applications. A big step in the evolution of the permanent magnet materials used today came in the 1930's with the development of Alnico magnets.
