Services
Valley Fir's roots began more than half a century ago when George Wilder Mitchell, Sr.recognized the need for high-grade lumber in the Columbus, Georgia area. The market demand was such that George moved the business from Hurtsboro, Alabama to Columbus within a year of opening. To help manage the growing business, George brought his son, George W. Mitchell Jr., in as President of the company. In 1992 George Jr.'s son, George W. Mitchell III (Tripp) joined his father as General Manager of Valley Fir.
Redwood decks create a natural focal point for outdoor living environments. As walking surfaces and entertaining areas, decks organize large spaces and reclaim irregular or sloped land. Redwood stairs and walkways provide attractive footpaths. Redwood decks range from simple platforms to multilevel projects using a variety of shapes and amenities.
Along with all its virtues of beauty, stability, and endurance, Cedar is naturally easygoing. Its ultralight weight makes transporting and handling a snap. Its soft texture and straight grain mean quick clean sawing and shaping. It takes nails and other fasteners without cracking or splitting. Valley Fir not only supplies cedar lumber but can also provide cedar shakes and shingles.
Cypress is a soft but very durable wood, lightweight and close-grained. With a tendency to resist rot, it is an ideal choice for exterior siding and fencing. It is also widely used for interior and exterior doors, shutters, millwork, and shingles. Cypress wood products have been used in building construction where resistance to decay is required.

My husband and I love the live slab table that Aaron at Valley Fir made for us. Aaron was very responsive and helpful as we were planning and completing the project. Overall, the services we received at Valley Fir were efficient, courteous, and professional. We highly recommend Aaron and his team for anyone's custom projects!

Aaron made custom cutting boards for us and we couldn't be happier with them! Not only did he create exactly what I had in mind, he had a quick turnaround time and send them to us overseas. The quality and craftsmanship in these pieces are evident and I couldn't recommend him enough for any project. These cutting boards will be staples in our family kitchen for many years to come!

Valley Fir sets the example for all lumber yards and construction material retailers. They are not going to load warped or damaged material and they employe staff that have actually have worked in the construction industry. If the can't find the product or solution you need you probably are doing it the wrong way! They have provided top notch customer service and products for decades. Also, this place has a real local soul since it is family owned and operated which is what I like best about them. Shop local!

Do not waste your time here. They have a good selection of wood but the front office is terrible. I tried to purchase wood for a kitchen table I am making. Pricing went from $215, to $235, to $250, to "I'll try and keep it under $300." But they wanted me to make a down payment without giving me a solid answer on pricing. I was asking for wood to be planed and the front office would not make up their mind on the price or even a "no more than" cost. I finally left and now I am working my project through Live Oak Woodworking.
