Chicago Dowel Company, with only ten initial employees, was founded in 1950 in a small factory at 41st and Langley Avenues on Chicago's South Side. Television was still in its infancy, and NBC's Texaco Star Theater was at the top of the Nielsen Ratings. The New York Yankees were World Series Champions.
In the 1990s, Chicago Dowel noticed customers' frustrations in dealing with glue. Working with glue involves a high degree of machine maintenance. Glue seepage and squeeze out compounds the problem by adding to down time with product needing to be cleaned and sanded. To answer this need, Chicago Dowel developed a process of pre-gluing their dowel pins.
Which pin (Spiral-Grooved or Multi-Groove) offers the better holding power? There is no definitive answer, as each customer's application differs from the others. Oftentimes the manufacturer of the customer's dowel-inserting machinery can give a preference as to which groove would better suit its machinery.
Chicago Dowel's Quality Control process begins at the lumber mill stage. Good quality wood products must start with good quality lumber. Logs are milled into cants, then sawn into boards. After stacking, the boards are slowly kiln-dried to 6-8% moisture content. Proper kiln drying is a crucial stage of lumber production.
