It really depends on an individuals personality, whether Soapstone would be a good fit. If you are a perfectionist (Dania style), this is probably not your stone. But if you like "patina" similar to Anthropologies' charm, than you will be sure to fall in love! You can decide what kind of tone/style you want these counter-tops to exude.
This is the new PA ORIGINAL variety of soapstone. Its not from Pennsylvania or Philadelphia. PA stands for "Pinheiros Altos", which is the city in Minas Gerais Brazil, where the quarry is from. This is a very hard variety, compared to most types that come from Brazil. If you're not too keen on your counter-tops accumulating a lot of patina, then this is the choice for you! This is a 5 on the Moh's scale, so its considered a hard soapstone.
We recommend oiling your countertops to ensure that the stone will evenly darken. The oil is not sealing or protecting the stone, it is only "speeding up" the natural darkening process that steatite (soapstone) goes through. Soapstone is non-porous and, unlike marble and granite, does not need to be sealed.
When it comes to a marble or soapstone edge, remember that the more square your edge is, the more apt it is to chip. You can still mostly achieve the squared look, just have the top rounded off. Stone fabricators refer to it as a "top round", 1/8" radius. My suggestion to have the whole kitchen "wear" the same, request the edge around your under-mount sink to have the same edge as the perimeter; that way you won't only see chips around the sink.

The service and staff at Crocodile Rocks rock! With a large and varied selection of soapstone, the staff and owners were both informative and patient during my decision making process. During these Covid daze where everything seems to take twice as long, they patiently held my chosen slabs much longer than anticipated and were so nice about it. Crocodile Rocks is a great small, local business with a very nice selection of soapstone!

We have been hunting for a very specific color stone. Most places we have gone to look (there have been MANY) the staff point off into a huge warehouse to where there "might" be something "like" what we asked for. if they did anything at all. In some cases they merely said "we don't have anything like that" Crocodile rocks was different. They took our name & # and offered to look.
After about a week, we heard back! Not only did Cheris follow through, she actually found several things that were quite close to our wish! We haven't picked any stone for sure yet but Crocodile Rocks absolutely gave us some of the best service we have experienced in this process. Would recommend.

Very friendly and informative staff! They spent several hours with us pulling out soapstone slabs and spraying them down with water so we could see the veining. They even emailed pictures of replacement slab when one broke during installation so we wouldn't have to go back in. We love our new soapstone countertops from Crocodile Rocks!

Crocodile Rocks was an absolute pleasure to deal with while doing research for a recent kitchen remodel. Cheris was extremely helpful and accommodating helping with everything from product knowledge to providing samples to test. She even went out of her way to set up an appointment for me with a previous customer to see the product installed in a kitchen. Couldn't ask for more from a slab supplier - will definitely go back to see Cheris for our next project!

Fantastic soapstone selection, and a very helpful and knowledgeable staff. They pulled many slabs out for me to look at in person and then sent me links to pictures when even more inventory came in. And they took time to tell me tips and tricks about care. It was a great experience working with them.
