Back in the early 90's I had a job interview. Prior, I was delivering to their silo with bulk cement from Blue Circle in Port of Baltimore so I was known to the Workforce there. Anyway this was before the CDL time in the old Class A licensing. It was raining and I went to their Office downtown to interview for work as a driver. As it turns out I was told that I was overqualified. (Class A etc.) I had to do some thinking and realized that if you are in a Yard Office surrounded by about 15 or so Mack Tractors and Lowboy Class A trailers on two sides out of the windows in addition to Class B mixers etc you are not wanted there as a employee.
The Boss was nice about it but was careful not to say that deafness (Hearing aids and legal to drive 18 wheelers in those days) was a problem rather than the yankee speak about over qualification in a yard full of parked 18 wheelers and other equipment. It was a different time in those days. Ultimately I emigrated to Arkansas where other Concrete employers had me working without question. Maryland was always a difficult place to get hired on in anything other than fast food.
